The companies, people and issues shaping business in Madison and the Capital Region.

1. What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?

As a consultant, the most rewarding aspect of my job is being able to work with many different types of clients to help them achieve their goals with their construction projects. This includes design of minor renovations within existing buildings or design of a completely new building.

The most challenging aspect would be managing multiple deadlines at once.

2. Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?

The person I admire in business the most is Michael Kock who is the president of Kock Financial located in Madison. Michael started this financial planning business on his own after working at two large financial institutions. I admire Michael for this because he gave up employment security to follow his goals of starting his own company and taking on the risks that go along with it. Today, Michael has developed a large client base that continues to grow. This is great example of how hard work pays off.

3. What has been the high point of your career so far?

The high point of my career was achieving my professional engineer’s license and being able to take advantage of the benefits that go along with that within my firm. Another highlight was being the lead electrical engineer on the first LEED-certified hospital in the state.

4. Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?

Be assertive and take advantage of all opportunities thrown your way. Don’t sit on the sidelines and wait for something to happen — get out there and market yourself.

5. What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?

The best things about being in Dane County are the number of things to do and having the Badgers close by. I am huge Wisconsin sports fan and have season tickets for Badger football and basketball. Outside of being with my family, going to these games is my favorite thing to do. We have a group that tailgates together before each home football game and we typically attend one road game each year, as well.

6. Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?

One of the things that people may not know about me is that I like to cook. I really enjoy trying new things with various meats on the grill, in the crockpot, or turkey fryer. I also like to try new ways to prepare potatoes.
