In a letter to the city of Madison, 14 restaurant owners near a proposed homeless shelter on the far east side expressed concern about how the shelter will affect their business, according to a report from WKOW-TV. The proposed shelter at the former Gander Mountain retail store is located just a block away from the restaurants located inside Global Market and Food Hall near East Towne Mall. The city and county are dedicating $3 million for the project but the restaurant owners are concerned that clients of the homeless shelter will loiter in the nearby food hall and discourage business. They say the city has moved forward with the plan without seeking input on how it would affect their businesses.
