A proposed luxury housing project hangs in the balance as the developer threatens to drop the project if a homeless shelter moves forward near East Towne Mall, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal.
The developer of the $100 million project plans to purchase the nearby J.C. Penny store location and build a 400-unit luxury complex. However, a proposed homeless shelter at 2002 Zeier Road is threatening the project. The developer said it would drop plans if the city and county move forward at that location.
In another story, the Wisconsin State Journal reported that the city’s finance committee voted 4–0 with two abstentions to buy the 2.67-acre vacant former Gander Mountain store location and convert it into a permanent men’s homeless shelter. The proposal still needs final approval from the Madison City Council.
