The Madison Plan Commission has approved Steve Brown Apartments’ request to allow the company to convert HotelRed to housing, according to a report from Wisconsin State Journal. The four-story hotel at the corner of Regent and Monroe streets will become an apartment complex with 50 apartments, roughly 3,000 square feet of first-floor commercial space, and 10 surface and 49 underground parking spaces. The 48-room hotel opened in 2011 but closed in March 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. The proposal was unanimously approved by the Plan Commission but a zoning decision will be needed by the City Council.
