The City of Madison Engineering Division announced Thursday the Madison Public Market achieved leadership in energy and environmental design gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The market, located at 202 N. First St., will host numerous merchants and vendors when it opens in March.

“We’re thrilled that the Madison Public Market has achieved LEED Gold certification, demonstrating our deep commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” Madison Public Market Foundation CEO Keisha Harrison said in a statement. “This milestone reflects the values of our community and sets the stage for a market that will serve Madison for generations to come.”

LEED is a globally recognized green building certification system that evaluates buildings on their environmental performance. LEED-certified buildings aim to use less energy and water, reduce waste and create better spaces for occupants.
