What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
The most challenging aspects of my job are trying to keep up with current industry trends and balancing a multitude of projects at the same time that are all at different stages of construction — from budgeting and design to building and close out. The most rewarding are the referrals and recommendations I receive from prior customers and the repeat business that is obtained from a project well done.
Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
There are so many amazing professionals in the Madison area; I find it hard to only admire one. During my relatively short career, I’ve taken the time to listen and read about the many successful business leaders in our area. Each business leader has a philosophy or idea that can be incorporated into my personal and/or professional career.
With that being said, the two individuals I look up to and admire the most are my father and mother, Fred and Mary Kolb. I grew up on a small dairy farm and my parents worked hard to keep the farm profitable, keep food on the table, and clothes on our backs. Tough business decisions, such as farm equipment and extra-curricular activities, were made daily. They taught my brother and I that hard work and determination can get you what you want in life, and that money isn’t handed to you, it is earned. My brother and I are both partners in the companies we work for and we have our parents to thank for the support and life lessons they have taught us over the years.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
The high point of my career, thus far, has been the transition from a project manager to a partner in a successful design-build construction company. I truly enjoy the challenges that I face daily and the clients I have gotten to know over the last year. 1848 Construction takes an exceptional amount of pride in their work and I am proud to be a partner.
Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
If I could give my 21-year-old self some advice it would be to be less conservative and take risks. I have had a lot of great experiences in my life and career; however, I missed out on opportunities with huge potential because of feeling afraid of taking the risk.

What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?
The best things about living and working in Dane County are the progressive society and the activities Dane County offers. I love the accepting nature and the open mindset of the people in Dane County, and the lakes, bike trails, music venues, and arts open endless opportunities for activities with friends and family.
Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?
I don’t believe I have any secret talents or abilities; however, an interesting fact about me is that before I joined the construction industry I was a teacher for three and a half years. I hold a degree in elementary education with an emphasis in math. I taught in the McFarland and Monroe school districts before becoming a project manager in the construction industry.
What are your guilty pleasures?
My guilty pleasure is sweets. I have a really bad (maybe some would call it good) sweet tooth. I’m a sucker for sweets of any kind, no matter what it is. It could be cake, custard, cookies, candy — you name it, I like it. I have to make a conscious effort to stay away or not indulge too much.
