The companies, people and issues shaping business in Madison and the Capital Region.

What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?

Our company works primarily with successful business owners who have grown their businesses to the point that they need a new facility, addition, or remodel. Helping guide those fellow business owners through the entire process of design, budgeting, permitting, and construction is fun, challenging, and very rewarding!

Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?

Gordon Renschler. I worked for Gordon in the 1990s at his design-build construction company here in Madison. Gordon and I are both registered civil engineers. He taught me a lot about owning and running a business in our industry.

What has been the high point of your career so far?

Founding 1848 Construction Inc. in 2015. I love our company, its clients, its people, its growing name recognition, and what its name symbolizes — visualize the Wisconsin state flag.

Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?

Trust your gut. It’s usually right.

What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?

I was raised in Madison — East High School class of ’78. Madison has always been a great place to live, work, and recreate, offering big city things to do in a mid-sized city.

Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?

I was a high school tennis player. I still love to play, although I don’t get out as much as I’d like to.

What are your guilty pleasures?

My wife and I own a home in Arizona. It is my get away “happy place”!
