What have you accomplished in your professional life/career since your 40 Under 40 selection?

After my 40 Under 40 selection, I continued to practice law for a few years and was elected to my law firm’s board of directors. Then I received an attorney’s dream call — I was hired full-time by my favorite client, the New Glarus Brewing Company. Since 2014, I have worked as the chief operating officer and general counsel for New Glarus. In this role, I work under the owner/founder/president and have duties related to all aspects of the business.

What accomplishments, milestones, or endeavors have you attained in your personal life since your 40 Under 40 selection?

I’ve continued to serve in the community, for example through coaching youth sports, volunteering with my church, and serving on the city of Madison’s Ethics Board.

If you were to “do it all over again,” what (if anything) would you do differently throughout your career?

Honestly, not much. I have been lucky to work with great professionals who I respect.

How did your 40 Under 40 selection help your career?

I’ve always enjoyed seeing the new inductees every year. It’s a great way of getting introduced to the best and brightest Madison has to offer.

What is something that you have a new passion for since the time of your induction — either professionally or personally?

As someone who now helps run a mid-sized business on a day-to-day basis, it’s been great to expand my experience beyond being just an attorney/advisor to a full-time business leader working with everything from sales to manufacturing.

Based on your experience, do you have any advice for today’s young professionals (under 40)?

Enjoy the journey and don’t wait to enjoy life. Young professionals work hard. The dirty secret is older professionals work just as hard. So, enjoy life now — don’t wait until you’ve “made it.”
