The Madison Common Council on Tuesday unanimously approved three proposals that aim to make it easier to build a range of homes and permit small and mid-sized buildings downtown, as well as increase flexibility for homeownership.

The proposals approved by the Common Council include:

  • Allowing more property owners with deep residential lots to split them, creating one or more “Backyard Lots” to support the construction of more homes;

  • Allowing two units of housing on any residentially-zoned lot to support the creation of more duplexes and homeownership opportunities; and

The package of housing changes is supported by 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, AARP, Downtown Madison Inc., Madison is For People, Realtors Association of South-Central Wisconsin, Strong Towns and the Urban League of Greater Madison, among others.
