WPS makes it official: 451 jobs to be lost in Madison, Wausau

Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS) has officially notified the state of Wisconsin that it will cut 451 jobs in greater Madison and Wausau.

The company, which announced the possibility of layoffs after losing federal contracts last year, will eliminate 250 jobs in Monona and Madison and 201 positions in Wausau.

WPS lost a contract to process medical claims for Medicare, the federal medical insurance program for retired people, and Tricare, a health program for the U.S. military.

Overall, the company employs 3,800 people.
