Madison’s first constructed homeless camp will be taking in residents as early as mid-November, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The camp is meant to serve as a safe alternative to the now illegal encampment at Reindahl Park near East Towne. The 1.8-acre site, at 3202 Dairy Drive, will hold 30 prefabricated tiny shelters that will be connected to electric service and come equipped with beds, heaters, air conditioners, and mini refrigerators. The site will also hold a building for an office, restrooms, and showers. Staff will be present during the day and evening. Services for mental health, addiction treatment, and help to find more stable housing will also be available. The camp is estimated to cost about $900,000 to build and $75,000 monthly for operations.
