According to WisBusiness, the latest Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) survey found that only 49% of respondents expect to add employees over the next six months, as compared to 68% at this time last year and 79% in summer of 2021.

WMC conducted its most recent Wisconsin Employer Survey online and via mail in late June. It included 170 businesses that WMC says are a representative sample of its membership.

Seventy-five percent of respondents also said they’re struggling to hire, down from 85% in a survey conducted around six months ago.

Much of the caution with hiring and wage raises stems from general uncertainty about the economic outlook at the state and national level. Only 21% of respondents said they would raise wages by more than 4%, as compared to nearly half of respondents last year.
