The University of Wisconsin-Madison Board of Regents recently requested that UW system President Jay Rothman either resign or retire.

WMC President and CEO Kurt R. Bauer issued a statement ahead of the April 7 Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents meeting to decide the fate of UW President Jay Rothman supporting the president.

“Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, Wisconsin’s largest business association, offers its full support and confidence in UW President Jay Rothman’s leadership and strongly urges the UW Board of Regents to reject what appears to be a capricious, unfair and possibly partisan attempt to remove Rothman from his position,” Bauer said in a statement.

Rothman has been president of the University of Wisconsin system since 2022.

Rothman said in a letter to the head of the Board of Regents on March 26 that he was not given a reason for the move.

The board said it “was prepared to terminate my employment despite all that has been accomplished.”

Rothman said he will not resign.
