Located between Two Rivers and Kewaunee along the shore of Lake Michigan, Wisconsin’s sole remaining nuclear plant will extend its operations through 2053, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

The Point Beach nuclear plant on Monday received U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval to renew its license, reportedly extending operations through 2050 for Unit 1 and 2053 for Unit 2.

Both units commenced operations in the early 1970s and were formerly renewed for operations through 2030 and 2033, respectively.

The plant, situated on around 1,200 acres, generates sufficient electricity to power almost 1 million homes, or around 14% of Wisconsin’s total electricity. It also employs roughly 400 people.
