The federal government approved more than $1 billion in funding for Wisconsin’s plan to expand high-speed internet access for over 175,000 homes and businesses, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
The funding comes from the $42.45 billion federal Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment grant program, which was created under former President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and helps expand broadband access in underserved areas across the nation.
The $1 billion for Wisconsin can be used to service all statewide locations, and “Community Anchor Institutions” such as schools, libraries and local government buildings will also receive funding, per the program.
Over three-quarters of the awarded projects concern fiber internet installation, while fixed wireless makes up 14% and satellite internet 10%.
