State officials say the Department of Workforce Development’s (DWD) ongoing unemployment insurance (UI) improvement effort is proceeding on time and on budget, according to a report from WisBusiness.

The agency is currently at the midway point of a comprehensive four-year modernization initiative, encompassing the automation of manual processes, implementing “plain-language” adjustments, and updating designs to enhance accessibility. Additionally, the initiative involves transitioning from an outdated computer system to a more advanced cloud-based program, among other improvements.

To facilitate these advancements, the agency entered into a partnership with Madison-based software developer Flexion in September 2021. Notable changes that have already been implemented include the introduction of a new messaging feature, enabling secure communication and document exchange between DWD staff and employers.
