On a week that saw Gov. Tony Evers issue his Badger Bounce Back plan to reopen the state, Republican legislative leaders have asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to block an extension of his safer-at-home order.
According to an article by the Associated Press, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald have filed an emergency petition asking the state’s high court to take the case directly, which would get a final ruling sooner than going through lower courts first.
Evers last week announced that he was directing state Department of Health Services Secretary Andrea Palm to extend the order closing most nonessential businesses from April 24 to May 26. But even with essential businesses now laying people off and statewide protests of the extension, GOP leaders are challenging Evers’ authority to extend the safer-at-home order beyond 60 days without legislative approval.
