Personal-finance website WalletHub released its report on the Best & Worst States for Women’s Equality in 2024 to determine where women receive the most equal treatment in American society. The study compared the 50 states across 17 key metrics. The data set ranges from the gap between female and male executives to the disparity in unemployment rates for women and men to the income gap.
Wisconsin came in No. 22 overall and was ranked No. 31 for workplace environment, No. 32 for education and health, and No. 18 for political empowerment.
The top three best states for women’s equality were Hawaii, California, and Minnesota — the only Midwestern state to make the top 10. The worst states were Utah, Texas, and Wyoming.
In every state, women earn less than men, and in nearly every state, women represent the highest share of minimum-wage workers. In nearly every state legislature, male lawmakers outnumber their female counterparts.
