A proposal submitted to Wisconsin’s Department of Administration by the state’s public defender’s office is seeking changes that would reduce how often criminal charges are filed in Wisconsin, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
The proposal is part of the agency’s budget request for fiscal years 2025–26. Agency suggestions include limiting the definition of criminal disorderly conduct and doing away with state criminal charges for marijuana possession.
Gov. Tony Evers will consider state agencies’ requests before submitting a budget recommendation in early 2025. The state Legislature is anticipated to approve a final budget ahead of the new fiscal year’s start on July 1, 2025.
