A lumber mill in Shawano County will reopen after closing about a year ago, and is expected to be a boon for northern Wisconsin logging operations, Wisconsin Public Radio reports.

The Timber Professionals Cooperative Enterprises has purchased the chip mill, the first time a logger co-op has purchased a chip mill in the U.S., and will revitalize the sawmill with an $800,000 loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development’s Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program.

The mill is expected to help the timber industry across northern Wisconsin after mills in Park Falls, Wisconsin Rapids and Duluth all shuttered in the last five years, especially by reducing transportation costs.
