Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced the opening of Wisconsin’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The initial fast-charging stations, located at Kwik Trip stores in Ashland, Menomonie, and Chippewa Falls, mark the beginning of a broader effort to expand EV infrastructure across the state.
Earlier this year, Evers signed legislation enabling WisDOT to administer over $78 million in NEVI funds, with $23 million already allocated to support 53 EV infrastructure projects. The goal is to build a statewide network of NEVI-compliant charging stations along federally designated Alternative Fuel Corridors, ensuring accessibility within one mile of highway intersections or interstate exits.
The Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (WEVI) Program, overseen by WisDOT, distributes competitive grants for installing, operating, and maintaining these stations. This initiative aims to support the state’s more than 29,000 registered EVs and provide convenient options for travelers.
WisDOT is currently accepting applications for additional federal funding to fill coverage gaps, with the next round of awards expected in spring 2025. For more details, visit the WisDOT website.
