If a nursing degree is not a professional one, we all have some soul searching to do.

A federal student loan policy recently reclassified nursing and other programs as no longer being “professional” degrees, which lowers borrowing caps of student loans, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.

A multistate lawsuit has been filed in federal court in Maryland opposing the move, arguing it is beyond the agency’s authority to reclassify.

Wisconsin has joined the lawsuit, which has 24 other states suing.

The education department determined that nursing, physician assistant and physical therapy students and more could take out $20,500 per year in loans. Previously, it was $50,000 per year.

Wisconsin and much of the nation already faces a health care worker shortage, making this move one that could potentially worsen the situation.
