Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul on Tuesday joined a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general in dozens of states in a lawsuit that targets Meta’s impact on children, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The lawsuit alleges that addictive features deployed by the social media company harm young people’s mental health and have contributed to a youth mental health crisis nationwide.
The lawsuit, filed in California federal court and joined by 33 other states’ attorneys general, further claims Mega, which operates Facebook and Instagram, has violated federal law by collecting data on children under age 13 without parental consent.
The lawsuit alleges that Meta’s business practices violate the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and state consumer protection laws.
