Wisconsin in slightly better shape than national average

A study from RunReviews.com shows Wisconsin ranked 16th for best physical shape in the nation. The study is based on recent data from the CDC on obesity, diabetes, heart disease, medical checkups, and the number of gyms in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The five locations with residents in the best shape are Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. The five states with residents in the worst shape are West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Alabama. Compared to national data, here’s how Wisconsin stacks up:

  • Number of gyms: 13.2 per 100,000 residents, (national average: 12.3); 
  • Exercised in the past month: 79.5%(national: 76.9%); 
  • Obesity rate: 32.3% (national: 32.1); 
  • Diabetes rate: 8.9% (national: 10.8%); 
  • Heart disease rate: 3.6% (national: 4.3%); and 
  • Annual medical checkup: 74.2% (national: 74.9%).
