A recent study from Health Affairs reported Wisconsin state government spending on health care was $674 per person in 2020, totaling 7% of total government spending but below the U.S. average. Wyoming spent the most per person on health care at $2,078, which is 19.7% of the total spending, and New Hampshire spent just $174 per person, or 2.0% of the total spending for the state.
Total health spending in the U.S. increased by 9.7% to $4.1 trillion. One of the biggest factors in that increase was a significant infusion of federal funding for health through COVID-19 relief legislation such as the $2.2 trillion CARES Act and the $900 billion Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act.
