The Wisconsin Grocers Association (WGA) last Friday voiced its concerns over deep cuts to FoodShare, Wisconsin’s version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), included in a recently passed federal budget bill.

The nutrition program, WGA said, is a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites and vital to local retail food economies. The program helps grocers and small retailers to maintain financially viable brick-and-mortar stores and promotes access to fresh food in areas where few other sources exist.

WGA urged collaboration from Wisconsin leaders at every level — including government, business and the community — to protect food access.
