As of Jan. 1, a new Wisconsin measure imposing a 3-cent-per-kilowatt-hour excise tax on electricity used to charge electric vehicles (EVs) at Level 3 chargers and Level 1 or Level 2 chargers installed after March 22, 2024, as outlined by 2023 Wisconsin Act 121, has gone into effect, according to NBC 15.

The tax applies to all EV charging stations, whether public or private, and regardless of whether consumers are charged for electricity. Residential charging stations are exempt. Charging station owners, operators, managers, or lessees must register with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

Revenue from the tax will support road repairs and construction. “This excise tax ensures all drivers contribute to road maintenance as EV adoption grows,” said Department of Revenue Secretary Designee David Casey.
