On the west side of Madison, a new Whole Foods Market is set to open on Wednesday, serving as the anchor for the Madison Yards mixed-use development near Hilldale Shopping Center, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The grocery store is a key element of the three-phase construction project for Madison Yards, with the second phase slated to commence next year.
The freshly unveiled Whole Foods Market boasts a spacious 50,000 square feet, replacing the older 30,000-square-foot store at 3313 University Ave., which initially opened its doors in 1996. Operating from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, the store is designed to showcase over 800 local items from the Midwest.
According to Madison Yards developers, the opening of Whole Foods Market marks the completion of the first phase of the $300 million, 21-acre project. This initial phase included the construction of a neighboring apartment building featuring 273 residential units in a 15-story structure. The apartment building offers a mix of luxury studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments.
Situated at the southwest corner of University Avenue and North Segoe Road, the project is part of a broader development expected to evolve over the coming years. Future plans include the addition of various office and medical spaces surrounding a green plaza, complemented by retail outlets, restaurants, a hotel, and entertainment options.
The first phase of Madison Yards also featured a 142,000-square-foot office building, incorporating 11,000 square feet of retail on its first floor. Additionally, a parking structure with 620 stalls was completed. A public plaza at the heart of the development, along with a 608,000-square-foot, nine-story office building accompanied by a 1,700-space parking structure, were also part of the first phase, situated just two doors down from the new Whole Foods Market.
