For the seventh year in a row, local wheel tax collections marked double-digit growth with a 12.1% increase in the past year, according to an analysis from the Wisconsin Policy Forum. For the fiscal year period ending June 30, 2021, Wisconsin local governments collected $62.8 million in vehicle registration fees, up $56 million from the previous year. Funds collected for vehicle registration must be used for transportation needs such as streets but can be channeled to other purposes such as public safety, libraries, or parks.
