We don’t want to Google “Google” for “Madison”, but we do need to get on Google’s map!

Community support, that’s what Google says it’s looking for while trying to decide what community (or cities) to pick as the site where it will build and test its ultra-high speed broadband. Topeka, Kansas, you’ve probably heard, actually changed its name to “Google,” giving us a glimpse of the depths that cities are going to drill down to, to catch Google’s attention.

Likewise, the city of Madison has thrown its hat in the ring. (Will we be boating on Lake Google anytime soon?). Who knows what the city powers-that-be can imagine? But the site competition is going to be fierce, and being named a Google test site would be waaay cool (as well as a key economic development feather in our hats), and we all would do well to be a part of the “Hey, Google, pick us, pick us!” shout raised from the Greater Madison region.

To give us some idea what we can do to help, IB asked (known techie-type person) Jennifer Smith of Thrive to tell us some of the many ways now to get involved in the push to bring ultra high speed Google fiber to Madison. And her best advice is “Pick one or more and GO!”
