A new Aldi grocery store is coming to Waunakee, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The news comes more than six years after news broke that both Hy-Vee and Festival Foods had plans for stores on the village’s south side.

Construction is underway for a 22,000-square-foot store at the corner of South Century and Holiday drives. The new Aldi will become Waunakee’s second grocery store, joining the Piggly Wiggly just west of downtown.

Aldi operates over 2,500 U.S. stores under the Aldi, Winn Dixie and Harvey’s banners, and it also owns over 600 Trader Joe’s stores nationwide, including the Monroe Street store in Madison.

Meanwhile, the Festival Foods proposal is no longer on the table, and while the property for the proposed Hy-Vee at the corner of Woodland and South Century drives has been cleared, it remains vacant.
