UW–Madison will receive almost $160 million in grants from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) to support research, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The amount includes $15 million dedicated to developing the university’s artificial intelligence (AI) enterprise.

WARF is UW–Madison’s nonprofit patent licensing arm. The organization supports researchers seeking to patent and monetize their inventions. It gives the grants annually.

This year’s $159.8 million grant is larger than last year’s, which was $134 million, but smaller than 2022’s $216.8 million donation, which provided funding for UW–Madison’s new Computer, Information, and Data Sciences building.

The university’s research enterprise will receive $105.4 million of this year’s grant funds to split among research projects, graduate and support staff salaries, and facility needs. The Morgridge Institute for Research, a private medical research organization housed on campus in the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery facility, will receive $5.3 million, and the $49.1 million remaining will be put toward technology costs.
