About 90% of people in American live within 10 miles of a Walmart, yet the company is in a battle to increase the speed of its rural deliveries, the Associated Press reported.
Amazon is also in the race to increase the speed of online deliveries to rural areas, which is estimated to be worth up to $1 trillion in annual sales.
The markets have become more valuable due in part to remote workers leaving metropolitan areas.
Shipping businesses are scaling back deliverers to rural areas to save costs, resulting in the retail giants employing drones.
These delivery drones are sent from stores or fulfillment centers. Walmart is also utilizing robotics to help pick and pack orders of high-demand products.
