The State Supreme Court has upheld Wisconsin’s voter ID law but has altered a provision of the measure so people can obtain identification cards at no cost.
The court ruled in two separate cases, one from the NAACP and one from the League of Women Voters, upholding the law 4-3 and 5-2, respectively.
Despite this ruling, the requirement to show photo ID at the polls remains blocked while the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago reviews an earlier ruling from a federal judge in April. That earlier ruling determined that Wisconsin’s law was in violation of the U.S. Constitution and the federal Voting Rights Act.
The voter ID requirement will likely not be in place for the Aug. 12 or Nov. 4 elections this year.
