According to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal, the Madison Metropolitan School District has initiated a hiring pause for most open positions while it determines its staffing needs for the forthcoming virtual first quarter of the 2020–21 school year. The district had paused hiring for central office positions in June.

The district is trying to ensure that all positions needed to support a virtual learning environment are identified first, according to MMSD spokesman Tim LeMonds. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need to provide educational services remotely, nursing positions and technical service staff are considered priority positions.
