Madison-based Virent Inc. has received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval for a plant sugar-based fuel that can constitute up to 45% of a blend with conventional gasoline. Virent, which has 80 employees, hopes to commercialize its technology in the future and is also working on plant-based substitutes for other petroleum-based products, like jet fuel.
