After an independent review by a retired Dane County judge, the Henry Vilas Zoo has been cleared of discrimination, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The investigation looked into employee complaints at the organization and found no evidence to support claims by Black zookeepers accusing zoo management of racism, unequal discipline, retaliation, and neglect of animal welfare. Retired judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn did find some evidence of isolated past issues with animal treatment that have been investigated or are being resolved. Bailey-Rihn noted that there was “room for improvement through more clearly defined processes, management training, and more open communication between staff and management.” The judge’s 51-page report includes 10 recommendations to improve the zoo’s general work environment, culture, and animal welfare.
