Verona high school student awarded $400,000 college scholarship

An area high school student has received a full-ride scholarship worth $400,000 from the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. 

Ja’kylah Powers, a Verona Area High School senior, received the scholarship on April 1.  

Boys and Girls Club of Dane County President and CEO Michael Johnson said she was selected from a pool of 94 applicants.  

Powers was chosen for her leadership, character, commitment to community impact and future academic goals.

“We had business leaders, educators, a couple of parents and Boys and Girls Club staff who went through all those applications, and she stood out because she was so impressive,” Johnson told news outlet Madison365 

Powers said she wants to study law at Florida Memorial University.
