Vaccine study paused after one illness

Late-stage studies of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate, involving a testing study at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, are on temporary hold while the company investigates whether one recipient’s “potentially unexplained” illness is a side effect of the shot, according to an Associated Press report.

The company says its standard review process triggered the pause for the company to review the safety data. The possible side effect was reported to have occurred in the United Kingdom, where the vaccine was being tested on thousands of people through Oxford University.
