Once among the top five in the country, the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s research will stay in eighth place nationally, according to a report released by the National Science Foundation.
Based on data from the fiscal year 2019 Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey, the report lists institutions that spent at least $150,000 in separately accounted for research and development funding. Since research spending began being tracked in the 1970s, UW–Madison has consistently ranked among the top five. However, in 2015, its ranking fell to sixth place and in 2018 it fell to eighth, where it has remained.
