UW–Platteville plans this week to lay off 60 employees as it seeks to close its $9.7 million budget shortfall by the end of fiscal year 2024, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The university will lose dozens of others to retirements, vacancies, and administrative restructuring.
Chancellor Tammy Evetovich in an announcement to employees Wednesday said the eliminated positions were chosen to preserve services that see high levels of student interaction and adjust programming to reflect enrollment declines.
UW–Platteville began the year with roughly 920 employees. Seventy-six academic and university jobs have since been closed; another 35 positions — which include faculty retirements and limited appointments — won’t be refilled, amounting to a 12% staff reduction.
The university has cut 27 administrative positions over the past year, reaching the level administration was at a decade ago.
UW–Platteville has also been considering furloughs to reduce costs but has not resorted to them.
