Students from UW–Madison’s biomedical engineering design program designed an adaptive rowing machine for Cottage Grove-based Johnson Health Tech, an exercise equipment manufacturing company, the Capital Times reports.
Creation of the project, a convertible machine fit for those who use wheelchairs and those without mobility impairments, took shape over the past three semesters. The students used a 3D printer to transform a standard rowing machine; a display console and multiple adjustment options allow for adaptations appropriate to users’ abilities.
The company will need to go through a regulatory process and fine-tune design elements before the adaptive rowing machine is introduced on the market, but the project is anticipated to pass through Johnson Health Tech’s internal testing stages.
