The University of Wisconsin–Madison is no longer in the top five of national research institutions, according to National Science Foundation data released by the university.
After ranking in the top five each year since 1972, UW–Madison dropped to eighth among public and private universities in the 2018 National Science Foundation (NSF) report.
The data shows the university remains a strong research institution, with nearly $1.21 billion in annual expenditures for research across all fields, about half of which come from federal awards. The university’s federal expenditures grew by 1.3 percent compared to the previous fiscal year.
Additional sources include state and local government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and foundations that support the university, including the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, which awarded the university $80 million last year, and the UW Foundation.
