The most recent edition of the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings for 2025 saw UW–Madison drop one place, tying for 13th among national public colleges, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The university ranked No. 39 overall on the national list when both public and private institutions were included — a four-place drop from last year’s No. 35 ranking.
UW–Madison, UW–Milwaukee, UW–Oshkosh, Marquette University, Edgewood College, and Concordia University Wisconsin were ranked among the nation’s top 433 universities.
The engineering school at UW–Madison was ranked the best of its programs and tied at 13th overall with three other schools. The university’s business school ranked No. 18 overall, and its fast-growing computer science program ranked 16th overall, rising six places.
In recent years, UW–Madison’s overall rank has trended higher, from No. 42 in 2022 to No. 38 in 2023.
