According to the Wisconsin State Journal, during a hearing with the Senate Committee on Universities and Revenue, UW System President Jay Rothman warned of the consequences if the GOP-controlled Joint Finance Committee follows through with its proposed budget cuts over diversity, equity, and inclusion offices on campus.

Among the consequences discussed were campus closures, tuition hikes, and the shutdown of some educational programs due to the gap between the System’s requested $435.9 million increase and the $32 million in cuts Assembly Speaker Robin Vos suggested last week.

The System had already voiced the possibility of campus closures after 10 of its 13 universities were projected to fall a combined $60 million short of their current operating needs by summer 2024.
