A 21-year moratorium on University of Wisconsin players and athletic department staff members shopping at The Shoe Box in Black Earth is coming to an end, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport. The action has also covered Rookies Food and Spirits in Mazomanie. The UW’s disassociation with the establishments owned by Steve Schmitt was a result of NCAA punishments handed down in 2001.

An NCAA major infractions case in 2001 determined that unadvertised discounts and lenient credit arrangements to Badgers athletes violated the organization’s rules about extra benefits, recruiting inducements, and a failure to monitor the athletics program.
