The National Institutes of Health has granted the UW School of Medicine and Public Health $70 million to continue the Inner-City Asthma Consortium’s effort to improve asthma in the inner cities, where the disease tends to be more prevalent. It is the largest federal grant ever received by the medical school.
The research is currently being conducted in 10 urban centers, and the UW is administering the project.
In the new study, about 500 kids will receive weekly injections of cockroach antigen and other allergens such as mouse, dog, and house dust for a period of two years to determine if their immune responses can be improved.
