The accomplishments of Nobel Prize winner and University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Francis Halzen will be celebrated during a fireside chat on Friday afternoon, Oct. 23, in the Great Hall at the Memorial Union.
Halzen was recently named the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking work detecting high-energy particles from deep space from a telescope in Antarctica.
The fireside chat, which will also feature interim Chancellor Eric Wilcots, will be followed by a panel discussion with experts from the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center.
Dan Hooper, the center’s director, will moderate the panel discussion.
Panelists include Terry Benson, director of the UW Physical Sciences Lab; Albrecht Karle, UW–Madison professor of physics and associate director for science and instrumentation at IceCube; and Lu Lu, UW–Madison professor of physics.
Following the event, a reception will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on the Memorial Union Terrace.
