The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture will fund a five-year, $9.9 million study at UW-Madison aimed at greening the dairy industry. The study is part of a $19.5 million initiative funded by the USDA to study the effects of climate change on dairy and beef cattle.
The study will focus on how best to reduce greenhouse gases and how to use energy more efficiently across the agricultural industry. Partnering with UW-Madison in the study are the University of Michigan, Penn State, the University of Arkansas, Cornell, North Carolina A&T, and the University of Washington. The U.S. Department of Energy, Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, and other USDA researchers are also involved.
UW-Madison will also help develop an agricultural education curriculum for the high school and college levels, with Milwaukee’s Vincent High School serving as a pilot site.
