The Associated Students of Madison passed a bill on Wednesday that calls on the University of Wisconsin-Madison to divest from companies connected to Israel, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.
The college denounced the move.
According to the bill, the students have deemed university investments, including those with asset manager BlackRock, to violate a Wisconsin statute that prohibits the UW system from buying into a company that practices or condones discrimination on the basis of race, religion, color, creed or sex.
More than 30 student organizations backed the measure, but UW-Madison responded by saying it the resolution “issued a number of flawed, unrelated and illegal demands.”
